Parenting,
Gender, and
the Law is a symposium sponsored by the Stanford Journal for
Civil
Rights and Civil Liberties, with support from the Clayman Institute,
Stanford University Feminist Studies Department, Graduate Student Council at Stanford University, and Stanford Law
School. The symposium will provide a forum for academics, legal
practitioners, and community organizers and activists to share
ground-breaking work on a number of urgent parenthood-related civil
rights issues. The Symposium will be open to Stanford students,
faculty, and the community at large.
Cherrie
Moraga,
writer, poet, and playwright, and Artist-in-Resident at Stanford
University, will give the Opening Address.
Dorothy
Roberts, Kirkland and Ellis
Professor at Northwestern University Law School, will give the Keynote
Address.
Panel
topics include: New
Reproductive Technologies and the Law, Parenting and the Criminal
Justice System, Parenting and Labor, and LGBT parenting. Each panel
will discuss issues of gender, state views of parenthood, and the legal
rights of parents.

Stanford Law School is pleased to sponsor this conference, which is
intended for public interest law faculty, practitioners, educators, and
students. Registration is free for all students, faculty, and community
members. Professionals are asked to pay $50 to register for this
symposium. Professionals should mail a check for $50 made out to
the Stanford
Journal of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties to: Stanford Journal of
Civil Rights and Civil Liberties; Stanford Law School; 559 Nathan
Abbott Way; Stanford, CA 94305-8610. No one will be turned away due to
financial hardship.
Professionals who would like to request a reduced or waived
registration fee should send an e-mail to lnutt@stanford.edu or
mmunoz10@stanford.edu outlining their financial situation (e.g.,
retired, unemployed, limited income).
